I spent last weekend with the in-laws at their vacation homes in Sebana, at the Southern tip of Johor, Malaysia. Getting there from Singapore used to be a straightforward affair; a 45-minute ferry ride from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal would bring you right to Sebana Cove (the resort development that the in-laws' vacation homes are part of) where in-house immigration officers await.
However, when the resort portion of Sebana Cove changed hands last month, the new owner terminated the direct ferry service. So to get there, we had to take a ferry to Belungkor instead. At Belungkor, a private cab picked us up and drove us to Sebana some 30 km away.
I wouldn't say that the new arrangement terribly inconvenient; we just have to call ahead to arrange for a cab or someone to pick us up from Belungkor whenever we arrive. Crummy as we may we feel lose a direct ride to Sebana, we are neither surprise nor perplexed by the new owner's decision with the ferry service. It is sort of a Catch-22 situation for the ailing and highly ill-managed resort; on one hand, it needed the direct ferry service to achieve and maintain critical visitor mass but on the other, it it needed the critical mass to continue offering the service.
